The skill set for effective HR leadership is rapidly changing to meet the demands of a dynamic marketplace. No longer will mastering the old-school human resource competencies earn HR practitioners the respect and credibility they need to be able to collaborate with today’s senior business leaders and successfully influence business outcomes. Instead, many CEOs are now expecting their HR leaders to know the business, speak the business language, and spearhead programs and initiatives that are aligned with corporate goals. Moderator Peter Cappelli, who has written and spoken more than a few times on the subject of core HR competencies, will guide an insightful discussion with several CHROs on what those skills are, how they’ve been applied to the panelists’ organizations, and what techniques are needed to cultivate and leverage them in your particular business.

Even before the debate over healthcare reform dominated the news, health and wellness initiatives were at the top of HR executives' minds. Combating soaring healthcare costs was already a high priority, as employers promoted personal responsibility for individual health and wellness to shift more of the financial burden onto employees. And to be sure, employer approaches to designing their plans have been key to controlling costs. But equally important to any comprehensive healthcare cost initiatives is the true outcomes these programs achieve. Carol A. Harnett, an expert on health initiatives and wellness, and the panelists will provide you with a prescription for creating both a healthier workforce and a healthier bottom line — including more than a few remedies you may not have considered.

They’re also taking essential steps to assess the current level of engagement in their workforces and employ new methods for fostering commitment and collaboration companywide – covering everything from how companies screen and assess talent to how they compensate and reward their people. The New Face of Workforce Planning

Dr. Jac Fitz-enz, Founder and CEO, Human Capital Source
There’s little consistency or predictability in the marketplace today, which puts added pressure on business leaders as they analyze their workforce requirements and try to prepare for the future. Workforce demographics are fluid and hard to anticipate, while forecasting markets tends to be a high-risk exercise. But despite these realities, HR executives are not without tools for deciphering the current strengths and weaknesses of their organizations and determining what needs and demands they’re likely to confront going forward. Dr. Jac Fitz-enz, who many consider the “father” of strategic human-capital analysis and measurement, will update you on the new mindset and operating model for predictive analytics, and will discuss how the two can be applied to real-world human resource management.

Executive pay, mergers and acquisitions, global expansion, management succession. These issues have serious implications for business growth and risk. To manage them, senior HR leaders at public companies aren’t just sitting at the table — they’re counseling, coaching and bringing critical expertise to the senior leadership team and board members to drive results. Stepping into a chief HR officer (CHRO) role today is vastly different than it was less than a decade ago, leaving many aspiring HR leaders inadequately prepared for the job. In this intimate session, Cornell University ILR School professor Patrick M. Wright explores new research on the evolving CHRO role and talks with current Fortune 500 CHROs, and an executive search expert specializing in CHRO placements, about what CEOs today really want in their CHROs, the weaknesses in the current talent pool, and how one unique development program can help HR executives close those gaps and succeed at the next level.
Presented by the Cornell University Center for Advanced Human Resource Studies (CAHRS).
